How to Frame Photos Properly | DeSola Custom Framing

Photographs are among the most personal things we frame. Wedding portraits, family photographs, professional photography, travel images, and older photographs passed down through generations can all deserve more than simply being placed inside a frame.

Good photo framing balances presentation with protection. The frame, matting, glazing, and mounting should work together to showcase the photograph while taking its long-term care into consideration.

Start With the Photograph Itself

Not every photograph needs the same framing approach.

Before selecting a frame, consider what you're working with. Is it an easily replaceable digital print, a professionally produced photograph, an older original, or an irreplaceable family photo?

That distinction matters.

A photograph that can easily be printed again gives you more flexibility. An original photograph that has existed for decades may deserve a more preservation-focused approach.

The size, orientation, condition, and photographic style should also influence the framing design.

Should Photographs Be Framed With a Mat?

Matting is a popular choice for photographs because it creates visual separation between the image and the frame.

A wider neutral mat can give a photograph a clean, gallery-style presentation. Multiple mats or subtle color accents can also work when they complement the image.

The proportions matter as much as the color. A small photograph surrounded by a carefully proportioned mat can have considerably more presence than the same image placed directly into a frame.

Matting can also help create separation between the photograph and the glazing, depending on how the piece is constructed.

Choosing a Frame for Photography

The frame should support the photograph rather than compete with it.

Black, white, metallic, and natural wood frames can all work beautifully with photography, but there is no universal rule.

A black-and-white architectural photograph might suit a simple contemporary frame. A warm family portrait could work better with a wood tone. A wedding photograph may call for something entirely different.

Instead of choosing based only on whether the frame matches the room, consider how its finish, width, and proportions interact with the photograph itself.

For a deeper look at those decisions, see how to choose the right frame for your artwork.

Think Carefully About Older and Irreplaceable Photos

Older photographs require additional consideration because replacing the original may be impossible.

Family photographs can also have enormous sentimental value regardless of their monetary value.

For these pieces, framing should consider the materials that come into contact with the photograph, how it is mounted, and the glazing placed in front of it.

Preservation-focused framing cannot stop the natural aging process entirely, but appropriate materials can help avoid introducing unnecessary risks to an important photograph.

UV Protection Matters, but So Does Placement

Light exposure is an important consideration when displaying photographs.

UV-protective glazing can help reduce exposure to ultraviolet light, but no glazing makes a photograph completely immune to environmental damage.

Where you hang the finished piece still matters.

Whenever possible, avoid placing important photographs where they will receive prolonged direct sunlight. Heat, humidity, and other environmental conditions should also be considered for particularly valuable or irreplaceable pieces.

Later in this series, we'll take a closer look at UV-protective glazing and when upgrading the glass in a picture frame makes sense.

Avoid Permanent Changes to Important Originals

If you have an irreplaceable original photograph, it is worth thinking carefully before using any mounting method that permanently alters it.

The appropriate approach depends on the photograph and its condition.

For particularly important family photographs, another option may be to create a high-quality reproduction for everyday display while keeping the original protected separately.

That can be especially useful with fragile photographs that have already experienced significant aging or damage.

Framing Wedding and Family Photographs

Wedding and family photography often has a different goal from framing artwork.

The image itself usually carries strong personal meaning, so the framing should enhance it without overwhelming it.

DeSola offers wedding photo framing for wedding portraits, engagement photographs, bridal portraits, anniversary photos, and other photographs from important occasions.

A custom frame also allows multiple photographs or related pieces to be designed as a coordinated display rather than treating every image separately.

What About Large Photographs?

Large-format photography can make a dramatic statement, but the size changes some of the framing considerations.

Frame strength and proportion become more important as dimensions increase. Glazing choices can also affect the weight of the completed piece.

A frame that looks substantial around an 8x10 photograph may look disproportionately narrow around a much larger print.

Custom framing allows those proportions to be determined around the actual photograph rather than limiting the design to standard frame sizes.

Don't Forget About the Wall

The photograph should drive the framing design, but its eventual location still matters.

Consider the amount of available wall space, nearby furnishings, natural light, and whether the photograph will hang independently or alongside other framed pieces.

A small family photograph intended for a hallway may call for a very different presentation than a large landscape photograph displayed above a fireplace.

The goal is to create a frame that works with the photograph first and feels comfortable in its eventual surroundings.
